How to choose the best car tint in Malaysia
One of the decisions you could be making after buying a car is if you need to invest in window tinting. If you decide that you do, this article will help you choose the best car window tint. But before that, you will first need to understand the regulations.
Car Tinting Regulations
The limit is set at 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT) for the windscreen and 50% VLT for the front side windows. There is no limit for rear and rear side windows.
If you need to have darker windows for safety or health purposes, you can apply for an exemption at JPJ. Once approved, you can tint your cars without extra payments if you have a health condition.
If you want to tint for non-health reasons, the application will cost RM50 in addition to a valid reason to tint these windows. You will also need to prove that you have no outstanding criminal records and that you have no outstanding summons. Once approved, you will need to pay RM5000 for an approval that lasts two (2) years.
Types of Car Tinting

Dyed Window Tint Film
Dyed Window Tint Films are one of the most economical window tints on the market. Although they are inexpensive, they lack some of the features of other types of tint. The dye in the tint is what blocks the sun’s heat and UV rays from entering the vehicle, though it is not perfect. The adhesive and the dye are side by side in the tint, which is applied to the window of the car. As expected from any form of car window tint, vision is not obstructed from the inside.
Metallised Tinting Film
Metallised Tinting Film consists of several layers. The base layer is the adhesive which glues the film to the window of the car. On top of this layer is the layer which blocks UV and other rays. This is followed by the metallised layer reflects heat and darkens the windows which prevents too much heat from entering the car. Lastly, a protective film on top prevents scratching.
Hybrid Tinting Film
The Hybrid Tinting Film, as the name suggests, is a hybrid that has the advantages of both the dyed and metallised tints. The hybrid tint has an adhesive layer, a dye layer, a metallised layer, and finally a protective coat. The dyed and metallised layers work in concert to absorb and reflect light, keeping the car cool on hot days and warm on the rare cold days.
Ceramic Tinted Film
Last but not least, are ceramic tints. These are tints with a thin ceramic layer melded with an adhesive layer protected by a protective coat. Ceramic tints are also more effective at blocking sun and UV light and do not interfere with radio or other waves due to the lack of metal. Much like the other tints, they allow light to enter, but not the heat.
