After several weeks of anticipation, Mazda has lifted the covers off its first mass produced Electric Vehicle (EV) at the Tokyo Motor Show. Codenamed MX-30, the brand’s first EV is the third new-generation model. The initial roll-out will be for the European markets.
As with all Mazdas, the MX-30 is made with a thought to bond between driver and machine. In other words, that ‘Jinba-Ittai’ feel. With the KODO – Soul of Motion intact, the MX-30 bears stark resemblance to the CX range and is based on the concept of ‘Human Modern’ design cues.
The new Mazda EV is an SUV, therefore space is the topic of interest here. Space in and around the center console give the cabin an open feel. To make things environmentally friendly, Mazda claims that the cork and fabrics are made from recycled materials, with a mindset to create a comfortable interior. Furthermore, the MX-30 adopts freestyle doors, enabling easy access for passengers.
As an EV, the SUV comes with electric-drive technology and e–Skyactiv. No official data of output, consumption and emissions have been released yet, at this point.
Safety is top priority at Mazda, hence the MX-30 EV is well-equipped with more advanced safety technologies, highlighted by the i-Activsense suite. New safety equipment imparted for the MX-30 include Injury and Damage-mitigating brake technology, Smart Brake Support (SBS) and Driving Lane Monitoring.
Despite the MX-30 adopting Mazda's center-pillar-less Freestyle door system, a sturdy collision safety is achieved through a rigid body and structures that efficiently absorb crash energy. In addition, the frame structures pay minute attention to the protection of the high-voltage battery.
