Many of us have been taught since we were young to save up whenever possible and avoid splurging when times are bad. That said, people require cars for a variety of reasons. Many of us need one to ferry the kids or our parents.
With that in mind, we’ve come up with a list of used cars for the budget conscious in terms of affordability, practicality and have low running costs.
Proton Saga and Persona
The two Proton models are built for budget-conscious buyers in mind. The Saga has a long history in the country as it was the first model to come out in 1985, when Proton started. Some thirty years later, the model has undergone plenty of upgrades, but the price remains very budget friendly whether it’s used or new.
With all the modern features and current technology add-ons, both the Saga and Persona share a common platform. The budget range for a used Saga or Persona is estimated between RM 10 – 20k, depending on year of make and general condition of car.
Its build quality and refinement are better than expected. But what really stands out is the car’s smooth drivetrain and the looks aren’t all that bad, either. Under the bonnet is a 1.4-liter that’s paired to a CVT (continuously variable transmission).. Price for a used Accent is estimated between 20 – 40k, again depending on year and condition.
The Toyota Vios has a lot going for it, beginning with its pre-owned price, which starts from RM 20k. Its cabin is roomy and secure, thanks to the flat rear floor and standard features. The Vios has a 1.5-liter CVT combo and is appropriate for city or long-distance driving. In Malaysia, the Vios is currently in its fourth generation but the price is rather steep when introduced. The previous three generations are available in the used car market at a more cost effective price.
Mitsubishi Mirage or Attrage
Several years back, Mitsubishi Malaysia launched the Mirage and Attrage, one’s a hatch and the other a four-door. Both are no longer in production but available in the used car market with very affordable prices. Both cars have a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine, paired to a CVT, for super-efficient city driving. In fact, the Mirage or Attrage is so efficient that it could cover up to 20.4km on a liter of petrol. Starting used car price for Mirage or Attrage varies from RM 10k and up,
Thanks to its compact dimensions, the Nissan Almera is one of the most manoeuvrable cars around. But don’t let its size fool you, this model actually has a very roomy interior. The slender body style gives the car a very flexible interior, too. Folding down the rear seat backs, for instance, liberates enough space to stow a bicycle or two huge luggages. A starting estimated used car price for Almera is RM15k.
If you’re looking for a sporty and nimble runabout, then the Suzuki Swift is right up your alley. A starting used car price is from RM20k for the older versions. The Swift in Malaysia comes in 1.5-liter and 1.4-liter engine variants.
Honda Jazz 1.3/1.5
There’s plenty to like about the Honda Jazz. It’s great for small families because it’s a supermini with a mini-MPV body style and a surprisingly big cabin. The Jazz’s interior is highly configurable, too, thanks to its Ultra Seats. Apart from split-folding rear seat backs, the squabs can also be folded upwards, allowing users to stow objects such as potted plants in an upright position.
Under the hood, the Jazz has a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter or a 1.5-liter engine. Both engines give good-enough power and most importantly, fuel efficiency.
Used car price for the Jazz 1.3l and 1.5l starts from RM15k for backdated models.
A used entry-level Kia Cerato is listed with a starting price of RM25k but stretching your budget a little here is worth it if you need and/or want a larger car.
Neat styling, a comfortable cabin and better performance are this sedan’s key offerings. It’s also quieter and more refined than the previous generation, thanks to its stronger and stiffer body.
