Our partners Route Hunters recently acquired the facelifted C300 AMG Line, courtesy of the Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, for a test drive. They were naturally excited over a variant at the top of the heap in the C-Class range. Just a few days earlier, we had witnessed the unveiling of the E-Class AMG line at the Cycle & Carriage Bintang showroom in Petaling Jaya.

Let’s dive right into the improvements in the new C300 AMG Line over the outgoing one, as evaluated by our partners at Route Hunters. Obviously, the general upgrade of the C300 is indeed worth the premium it commands. The C300 AMG Line starts out to be a ‘Beast’ look-alike but remains sultry with Mercedes-Benz’s classic C-Class elegance and demeanor.

The C300 AMG Line has a new front bumper that is sculpted to be aggressive with the blacked-out air dams on each side. Those Multi-Beam LED headlights with an unmistakable Three-point star emblem on a one-piece chrome decal line immediately gives a dynamic effect to onlookers. Meanwhile, the front grille, inspired by the C43 AMG, gets the similar diamond-contoured effect. Route Hunters pips has evaluated how effective the multi-beam LEDs are and testified that these aren’t your regular fancy LEDs. They tried the Adaptive high-beam assist and discovered that the LED modules regulate individual LED to determine brightness, ensuring you do not blind oncoming traffic, while lighting up the road ahead of you. This is handy and extremely safe when driving at night on highways and B roads.

The side of the car carries the classic C-Class look to the fore, although the sloping roofline has a more obvious Coupe effect than on the standard C-Class line-up. To make the C300 a sporty ride, the car is fitted with 19-inch 5 spoke AMG wheels with staggered tyre sizes (front and rear differ in specifications).

From the rear, the C300 AMG Line has those slim LED rear lights and a rather familiar bumper with all the tail features from the C-Class range. Chrome treatment are available on the tailgate and lower bumper section.  Final finishing touches on the rear are the encapsulated exhausts and a diffusor.

If the C-Class range is all about elegance, then the C300 AMG Line brings it up a notch with detailed final touches and the latest technologies. The C300 AMG Line has a fully digital instrument display with COMMAND function. The touchscreen is now bigger and clearer for all your important vehicle data and connectivity purposes.

Route Hunters put a litmus test on the full-digital touchscreen, increased from 10.25” from 8.4”, and tested a number of display modes and settings. Their favorite was the target display which displayed fuel consumption and how efficient the driver drove and it even showed mileage gained per trip.  Next up is the COMMAND ONLINE System, which enables connectivity and literally mirror-screen your smartphone’s interface to the touchscreen. Once a phone is paired to the car’s screen, the driver can navigate on the screen itself or via the switches on the steering to toggle different menus. Another effective feature is the voice command, which allows for seamless interaction between you and C300 AMG Line, literally.

Consistent Mercedes-Benz quality and craftsmanship

Mercedes has managed to keep plenty of the C-Class features in check with the C300 AMG Line. Boot space, for one, is more than sizeable. The boot has depth for a few full-size luggage’s thanks to a generous allocation at the rear. One feature that stands out at the rear is the hands-free tailgate system, which is ‘God’ send when you’re stuck with your hands full.

Craftsmanship is maintained for the top-flight C-Class, thanks to black open pore ash wood trims, nappa-like leather upholstery and plush trim levels on the steering, gear-knob and visible panels. Then, there’s the cool Panoramic roof for the term, ‘let there be light’.  Overall the interior might be minimalist, but Route Hunters has found out that the C300 AMG Line has plenty of systems’ overhaul.

Entertainment is left to the incredible Burmester Hi-Fi, which pumps serene sounds with optimum highs and lows, as well as smooth mid-range.

Route Hunters’ folks really love driving, but with the C300 AMG Line they just won’t stop cause the car did it for them, literally. They called it an electronic PA for driving. According to them, the C300 could move itself in traffic on daily commutes at a recommended speed limit of course, much like a personal assistant aiding your drive. They compared the C300 AMG Line to the S-Class, where driver’s assistance systems like Active Lane Keep Assist and Blind Spot Assist would keep your C300 in the right lane at all times. A much-needed aid in avoiding expensive, time consuming and not to mention heart aching sideswipe incidents. Plus, the C300 AMG Line takes up a 360-degree camera, which provides sharp and crisp visuals day or night, and its proximity sensor gives you an accurate indication of distance to maneuver when parking in tight spots.

The Might and Power of the Beefed-up C-Class

The engine, while retains 370Nm from the outgoing car, has its horsepower bumped up from 245bhp to 258bhp. Coupled that with a 9G-Tronic gearbox, this car hustles along a lot more urgently. And unlike the outgoing car which had AMG Sports suspension, the facelift C300 AMG Line has AIRMATIC springs with Dynamic Select. This allows the car to have the tight body control of a sporty car when you want to hustle through the corners, and mellow down to a more comfortable ride setting when you just want to get home after a long day.

Mercedes-Benz C300 AMG Line: Safety is priceless

The one thing Route Hunter guys cannot put a price tag on is the safety features. Aside from the 5-star Euro NCAP Score, 7 airbags, and all the standard stability control and electronic driving aids, the facelift C300 AMG also sports Active braking and tyre pressure monitoring sensors (TPMS) for pre-defined purposes. Active braking helps with more adventurous drives, while TPMS speaks for itself.

Now if you’re worried that this might just be a comfortable and fast cruiser, think again. It’s a truly sporting car with very capable dynamics.

The Mercedes C300 AMG Line has a price tag of RM304,888, which is almost RM3000 cheaper than the outgoing variant.
