Malaysians have certainly heard of the DS marque if they’re into premium cars or every bit interested in cars made by the PSA Group. PSA Group owns the three French marques encompassing Peugeot, Citroen and DS. Locally, the brands are distributed by Nasim and Naza Euro Motor, the subsidiaries of Naza Group.
From 2013 until present under the stewardship of Naza Euro Motor, the DS marque hasn’t exactly flourished as models introduced became lesser over the years. It started off right with the debut of the DS 4 and DS 5 models in the brand’s early years. The DS 3 then came along and got somewhat accepted, but Naza Euro Motor didn’t push too hard as the price point for the DS cars in general were not competitive enough. It wasn’t until the KLIMS (KL Motor Show) that the local DS distributor decided to introduce a new model, the DS 7, and its very first flagship store. Of the four DS models in the country, the DS 3 and DS 5 were be most sellable.
Globally, the DS marque has thrived under heavy competition from the usual suspects. Following unveilings of DS 7 Crossback and DS 3 Crossback a year ago, DS Automobiles has now unveiled the New DS 9 large sedan. The DS 9 is the brand’s first true flagship model.
The design theme of DS cars is always about sensuality and elegance, and the new DS 9 is no exception. The shape of the DS 9 is defined by a three-box design with a sleek silhouette that flows to rear fastback style. Based on the EMP2 platform, the dimensions are 4930 mm in length and 1850 mm width, As a large sedan, it has a long wheelbase of 2,900mm for obvious reasons.
Highlights on the exterior include the DS Wings 3-D diamond effect grille, ‘Clous de Paris’ saber bonnet, cone shapes and new rearlights with a thin brake light. In addition, the body-colored flush fitting door handles and a two-tone black roof bring up that elegant effect.
DS Lounge is the term used to describe the interior of the DS 9. Sophistication of cabin of the DS 9 is best defined by the use of quality materials such as Nappa on the dashboard, watchstrap design on the seats, crystal-shaped buttons, Alcantara roof lining & sun visors and leather-wrapped door handles, The Pearl-stitched seats, with leather or alcantara option, have heating, cooling and massaging functions, to go with Art Rubis leather-wrapped steering, leather armrest and console with storage compartments, built-in USB ports, control switches and multi-colored welcome lighting. Speaking of the center console, the console is finished with ‘Clous de Paris’ guillochage, the iconic signature of fine French watchmaking, reiterated by the 180O rotating B.R.M timepiece on top of the dashboard. Last but not least, the car features the Premium FOCAL Electra sound system, specially developed for the DS 9.
DS 9 engine options
At launch, the new DS 9 will come in the 250hp E-Tense plug-in hybrid and 225hp PureTech petrol engines. Both variants are equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The E-Tense variant on electric motor can only achieve 40 to 50 kilometers before recharge, but an output of 110hp and 320Nm is expected. The DS 9 utilizes an energy recovery system that re-charges the battery in deceleration or brake phases, amplified with an enhanced Braking function selected by pulling back the gear selector and displayed as ‘B’, and there’s an E-Save function.
DS plans to introduce two more E-Tense power units to the line-up; 250hp 2-wheel drive and 360hp 4-wheel drive.
DS 9 Driving Dynamics
As DS’ flagship model, the DS 9 has ample driving aids to maintain that status The impressive list includes the DS Active Scan Suspension, DS Drive Assist, DS Park Pilot, DS Safety, DS Night Vision, DS Active LED Vision, DS Driver Attention Monitoring and DS Smart Access. With DS Active Suspension, there’s a camera that scans the road, level sensors, accelerometers and drivetrain sensors record every movement and the system prepares the damping of each wheel for road imperfections in order to improve safety, serenity and provides ride comfort without equal.
The new DS 9 is manufactured in China and goes on sale there first from the second half of 2020.
