National carmakers Proton is certainly not letting up on publicity eventhough it is the year end. In a latest release, they announced that their best-selling SUV, the X70, has just rolled out off its main production plant in Tg Malim. An event was held to witness the roll-out for local dignitaries, Geely representatives and Proton big guns at the new extended area of the factory.
The X70 was unveiled a year ago, but production of that model has been at the Shah Alam factory until now. Due to an encouraging response for the X70, Proton had to expand on production to meet demands. This led to a concurrent production at its main production factory, eventually.
Proton’s main production factory in Tg Malim has been expanded to cope with larger portfolio, not just the X70 but current important models. The expanded wing costs Proton RM1.2 billion of investment. All local and International vendors have been sorted out prior to the start of production at the new wing. The new factory wing isn’t only for building the X70 and related models, Proton has intentions to produce jointly developed models with Geely and right-hand models for exports at the new wing.
The extended factory saw as many as 7 new vendors, local and International, joined the Proton family. Aside from vendors, Proton reached technical agreements with strategic partners and received FDIs (foreign direct investments). In all, Proton received a total investment of RM263 million and from that, there were 1,084 jobs made available.
Geely Auto as major partners of Proton has expressed its satisfaction on progress made over the past 2 years.
