McLaren Kuala Lumpur has a new headquarters situated in the hub of automotive country, in Glenmarie Shah Alam. Under the new stewardship of Mc Farren Supercars, McLaren KL has its due re-birth in Malaysia. The previous McLaren center at Mutiara Damansara had long been shut down after Sime Darby withdrew from distributorship of the British Supercar marque.
The new McLaren KL center has a 420m2 showroom to showcase the current range of McLaren’s finest, including the latest unveiling, the McLaren GT. The center also offers the ultimate McLaren customer experience from sales to after-sales. For the first time, there is an interactive car configurator for prospective customers to configure a McLaren of choice. Every new McLaren owner gets a unique opportunity to view the McLaren Production Center (MPC) in Woking U.K. through the McLaren Window.
Previously, McLaren KL kicked off its local venture with the unveiling of the McLaren 720S. With the new headquarters in place, McLaren KL took the opportunity to unveil the newest model to the McLaren family, the McLaren GT. The McLaren GT now joins the existing line-up which includes the 570S Coupé/Spider, 600LT Coupe/Spider and the 720S Coupé/Spider.
The buzz on the McLaren GT
The McLaren GT is grand daddy of the Grand Tourers. As the first true McLaren Grand Tourer, the GT takes up long, elegant exterior lines, to go with the muscular rear fenders. The air intakes are there for the high-temperature radiators that cool the engine. In a nutshell, the GT is Ionger than its Super Series siblings with an extended front and rear overhangs. Major highlights on the McLaren GT are a signature Hannerhead line, an athletic profile and an integrated fixed rear wing with large diffuser and exhaust tailpipes.
Moving inside, the GT is somewhat different compared to current McLarens. First, the boot space is larger with a capacity of 570 liters, then there’s dihedral (scissor) doors for easy access, a cabin more comfortable for distance drives, optimum seats and well-positioned control switches. The driver looks at a clean infotainment system (touchscreen/instrument cluster) and up top, there’s a carbon fiber composite gloss black roof. Ambient lighting is present to bring up that luxury factor, as well.
For entertainment, the McLaren GT is fitted with a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system with carbon fiber sub-bass woofers. Everywhere else, Nappa leather is the standard trim with upgrade to softgrain luxury leather available as an option, as well as SuperFabric trim for the boot.
The McLaren GT is powered by a new, 620PS 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged engine, designated M840TE. Torque is jacked up to 630Nm between 5,500rpm and 6,500rpm, with more than 95% of this available from 3,000rpm to 7,250rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed SSG transmission to deliver linear, seamless and relentless acceleration. A 0 – 100 km/h dash takes a mere 3.2 seconds, while maximum speed of the McLaren GT is 326km/h. There are three modes of drive: Comfort, Sport and Track.
The GT’s suspension comprises a lightweight aluminium, double wishbone paired with hydraulic dampers (Proactive Damping Control). Driving precision and enjoyment is further enhanced in new McLaren GT by hydraulic steering, which uses a single software ‘map’ across Comfort, Sport and Track modes to deliver optimal feel and response.
Last but not least, the McLaren GT shods bespoke P Zeros 20-inchers front and 21-inch rears, available in 7- or 15-spoke designs.
