Honda Malaysia has a knack for milestones this year, following two major ones. They announced the 100,000th Jazz last month and the 130,000th Civic prior to June. This time around, it’s the 10,000th Honda Hybrid’s turn. A customer bought the 10,000th Honda City Hybrid, which incidentally made it the ten thousandth unit delivered.
A certain Saddam Hassan purchased the City Hybrid from a Honda Dealership, Macinda Auto. Honda took the opportunity to make it a worthy media announcement.
As the 10,000th customer, Saddam received a gift of a complete “Protection Package” from Honda. The package comprises full body coating, window coating, and wheel lock nut. In addition, he got a complimentary Modulo package as a token of appreciation.
Saddam commented, “This is such a pleasant surprise for me to be the 10,000th Honda CKD Hybrid owner. I chose the City Hybrid because it is practical and spacious, especially when traveling with my family. I was absolutely impressed with the Hybrid performance, fuel efficiency, as well as safety features.”
Honda Malaysia’s Sarly Adle Sarkum remarked, “This year marks the 15th year since Honda introduced Hybrids in Malaysia. Starting with the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology to the intelligent Dual-Clutch Drive (i-DCD), Honda continues to focus on introducing Next Generation Advanced Technology innovations to the Malaysian market. We are proud to have reached this 10,000 units of Honda CKD Hybrid sales which is a significant achievement.”
HONDA HYBRID CARS IN MALAYSIA
Back in 2004, Honda started the Hybrid cars trend in the country with the Civic Hybrid. The Civic Hybrid was fairly well accepted at the time, but the cost of owning one could be a little on the high side. After that trial run, Honda turned to local assembly of hybrid cars starting with the Jazz Hybrid at their Pegoh Plant, Alor Gajah, Malacca in 2012. The City Hybrid came about several years later. Both models became an instant hit, thanks to lower cost of production and affordability. The hybrid initiative puts Honda on the map as the first Non-National brand to produce hybrids domestically. Incidentally, Malaysia became the third country to manufacture hybrid cars after Japan and the U.S.
The City Hybrid, Jazz Hybrid and HR-V Hybrid would all get the Sport Hybrid i-DCD system. The City and Jazz reworked in 2017 share a 1.5l DOHC i-VTEC engine, paired with a 7-Speed dual-clutch transmission with an Integrated Motor.
When the HR-V Hybrid was introduced early this year, it was the first Hybrid compact SUV. The HR-V hybrid takes up the same 1.5l DOHC i-VTEC, but with a direct injection to improve acceleration and fuel efficiency.
Of the 10,000 hybrid cars, the Jazz tops the sales with 6,000 units followed by City with 3,400 units. The HR-V hybrid, the newest in the line-up, has gotten 670 units as of June 2019.
