Ford addresses Sustainability and to be Carbon Neutral by 2050

Ford Motor Company has recently released a report on how the Blue Oval sees the future of environmental sustainability, in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, The goal is to reduce carbon footprint by 95 percent in three key areas of its business, namely vehicles, supply base and facilities. Ford is the only American automaker to follow the Paris Agreement.

 

Developing total sustainability for the future

The Blue Oval has pledged more than $11.5 billion to develop Electric Vehicles (EVs), namely the Mustang Mach-E, Transit Commercial EV and the F-150 EV, due in mid-2022.

 

The Mach-E (title picture), introduced in 2019, is an all-electric Mustang SUV due for roll out in late 2020. The Mustang SUV EV is estimated to offer 300 miles of range on a single charge. The other EVs on the horizon are the Transit EV and F-150 pick up. Other than the EVs, Ford’s multi-billion investment gave birth to America’s largest public charging network, the FordPass Charging Network. The network has more than 13,500 charging stations across the U.S. and approximately 40,000 individual charge plugs.

 

Apart from the EVs, Ford is planning to use locally sourced renewable energy for its manufacturing plants throughout the world by 2035. Revewable energy comes from sources that naturally replenish such as hydropower, geothermal or wind and solar.

 

Going further with recycled materials

To further reduce carbon footprints, Ford has been using recycled materials for over a decade to turn waste byproducts to vehicle parts. For example, in a collaboration with McDonald’s last year Ford takes coffee chaff from McDonald’s production and use them to make vehicle parts. This sustainable innovation not only reduce petroleum use, but the resulting components are 20 percent lighter and require up to 25 percent less energy during the molding manufacturing process.

 

Ford has been using soy foam as an alternative to petroleum-based seat foam in the Mustang. Since 2007, the company has expanded soy foam to every vehicle line in the U.S.A., encompassing more than 25 million vehicles. This move has cut hundreds of millions of pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

 

Other matters included in the sustainability report was Covid-19 prevention and safety measures and Women empowerment.
