The Covid-19 outbreak has caused the world to take preventive measures and containment in full effect. Major car companies like Volkswagen prioritize health over speed by laying down clear rules and measures for the protection of employees.
As production and after sales services resume after the lockdown for several major companies, there is a call to all employees to continue to act in a disciplined way, which is to keep your distance, stay home for those not involved in the frontlines and help to limit the spread of the pandemic.
For production workers, the car companies have decided that a few units of components manufacturing to continue operation to some extent. The reason is to safeguard the supply of components to plants in a specific country or countries, where lockdown is no longer enforced.
Apart from the above operations, production at the components and vehicle plants continue to be temporarily halted until after the lockdown is lifted.
All car companies have the one objective for preventive measures as precautions against the covid-19 at an early stage in order to prevent the spread. Production processes are being optimized and consistent minimum distances and strict hygiene standards will apply in all areas. Where minimum distances of 1.5 meters are not possible, all employees will receive appropriate protective equipment such as PPEs and masks. In later stages, a defined timetable will be announced in various phases until the return to normal operation.
The production timetable is implemented to ensure employees’ well-being and health, as well as to assist in reliable planning and communications. In any case, car companies would rather produce one fewer vehicle than take any risks.
Comprehensive Preventive Measures
The production will be accompanied by a comprehensive package of measures; due in several phases. In phase 1, maximum precautions will apply and these will gradually be reduced until normal operation is reached in phase 4. The transitions will be agreed between the company and employees.
The package of measures includes specific rules on distances and hygiene, an obligation to wear mouth and nose protection in areas, where minimum distances of 1.5 meters are not possible, harmonized cleaning intervals, the separation of shifts in order to avoid contacts and a call on employees to measure their temperature under their own responsibility before starting work each day.
For the other non-production departments, current adjustments apply including working remotely, flexible work timing, mobile working and so forth. The adjustments will apply until further notice.
