BMW has unveiled the latest M high-performance variants: The New X3 M and X4 M. Both models are the first in their respective Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segments. Alongside the M models are their Competition equals: The X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition.
Compared to the standard models, the M models and the Competition variants have the specific M design and of course optimize for aerodynamics.
Inside, adjustable sports seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, M-specific cockpit, M leather steering wheel and M gearshift selector lever are the norm. The Competition variants get a bit of extras such as; High-gloss Black kidney grille surround, exterior mirror caps, M gills and rear spoiler. Their standard equipment also includes 21-inch M light-alloy wheels in polished Black and an M Sport exhaust system. Across all M and M Competition models, standard features include LED headlights, hi-fi speaker system with ConnectedDrive navigation
Interior-wise, there’s M Sport seats with extended Merino leather upholstery, model-specific door sill plates and a model nameplate on the center console. Options for the Competition models include special bi-color leather upholstery variants with Alcantara applications. M Carbon exterior package will be available in August. Options for the X3 M and X4 M comes with individualization and driver assistance systems and digital services.
Both X3 M and X4 M share a new six-cylinder engine, the most powerful straight-six claimed by BMW. The newly developed high-revving unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology generates maximum output of 480 hp from its 3.0-liter displacement, together with peak torque von 600 Nm. The version of the bi-turbo unit developed specially for the BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition raises the output figure to 510 hp (<30hp).
The engine is paired to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and uses the new M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The M xDrive system has a rear-wheel bias and offers BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M owners two AWD driving modes. Engine power is evenly distributed to four wheels, thanks to the M xDrive and the Active M Differential at the rear axle. The M variants push 0 – 100 kmh in 4.2 seconds, while Competition versions hit 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds.
As M-specific cars, both models have body strengthening elements and sophisticated chassis technology tuned astutely to marshal the engine’s power. With three settings selectable at the touch of a button, the M-specific suspension’s electronically controlled dampers enable both comfort and lots of fun.
Meanwhile, the bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics of the M-specific suspension, with its double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle, deliver precise wheel location and directional stability. At the same time, powerful M compound brakes are a perfect match to the 20-inch M light-alloy wheels.
